2020 - Weirdest Year Ever?

Hi everyone!

I did a post like this back towards the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, but I figured I do another, because 2020 was a weird year. So I gathered up some of the craziest things that have happened in 2020 (not including the many pandemic-related things), and share them with you! These are only a few of the many, many things that have happened, but they are still a lengthy list. So let’s get started!

(Reddit)

Weird dates: First off, March 19th was the first day of spring everywhere in the USA (despite time zones). As a child, some of you learned that the spring equinox happens on either March 20 or March 21. This is the first time in 124 years the first day of spring has occurred on March 19 nationwide!

Leap year: 2020 was a leap year, an extra day in February

Impeachment in USA: Donald Trump was officially impeached on February 5, 2020. Part of the impeachment took place in 2019, but also in 2020. Then, he made history in December 2020-February 2021 by being impeached twice.

UFO’s over the plains: At the beginning of January, hundreds of huge, UFO drones were flying over Colorado, Nebraska, and other states around them. Even now, no one knows what happened to them.

Lots of wildfires, in the USA, and other countries: As of February 5, 2020, 94 wildfires had already burned in California alone! Wildfires in Colorado also set some crazy records.

The UK got some weird weather: the UK doesn’t often get a lot of snow, but in January they got over 10 inches, in some places, they were getting up to 20 inches!

The Royal family left: The royal Harry and Meghan decided to step away from the royal family and split their time between North America and Europe, it was fairly shocking. "Meghxit," as people are calling it, seemed to have shocked the Queen as well.

Cinco de Mayo: It falls on Taco Tuesday! Insane, right?

Election: Obviously there is an election going on in America, which just adds to the chaos.

2020: 2020 is also just a rare year, where the two ‘groups’ of numbers are the same. It only happens every century or so (1717, 1818,1919, etc.). Also, this year seems unreal, like we’re still thinking of the 2020’s as the future.

Murder Hornets: In May, we heard that the Asian giant hornets (murder hornets) had made their way to the USA. They can wipe out whole bee hives in a matter of hours. They also stung EXTREMELY painfully, and could puncture bee-keeping suits.

A high school student discovered a new planet: only a few days into the year 2020, a 17-year-old high school student discovered the planet on the third day of his internship with NASA. Named TOI 1338 b, it’s 6.9 times larger than earth, orbits two stars instead of one every 95 days, and is 1,300 light years away.

Star Disappears: astronomers say that a massive star seems to have mysteriously vanished from a distant galaxy. The star is part of the Kinman dwarf galaxy. No fanfare, just -poof- gone.

Poland accidentally invaded the Czech Republic: in May, Polish military mistakenly invaded and briefly occupied territory in the Czech Republic.

A green puppy: in October 2020, an Italian farmers dog gave birth to a litter of five puppies, including one with green fur.

World War 3: though a lot of people were not worried about World War III happening, early in January, people were making Memes and getting scared about the start of World War III. When President Trump ordered the killing of Iranian army general Qasem Soleimani.

Kim Jon-un didn’t die: for a short period in April, people genuinely believed that Kim Jong-un had passed away thanks to a lot of miss information that was being spread about the dictator.

Backwards waterfall: due to crazy high wind speeds, several waterfalls in Royal national Park near Sydney, Australia actually started to be blown backwards creating a literally reverse waterfall.
Monoliths: A mysterious monolith was found November 23 in Utah’s red-rock desert. Days later, it vanished, leaving everybody curios about where it came from and where it went. After, videos were re aséales showing the monolith being taken down, and people found out that it had been around for years, just sitting there. Soon, there was one found in Romania, then one near San Francisco. After that, it blew up, and everyone was making and placing monoliths. We still don’t know where the Utah monolith came from.

Christmas Star: On the winter solstice, the ‘Christmas Star’ lit up the night, with Saturn and Jupiter combining their light.

Oldest President: Joe Biden was elected as our oldest president.

Kamala Harris: Kamala Harris was elected as the nation's first black, Indian, and woman Vice President.

These are only a few of the crazy things that happened in 2020, there are obviously so much more. Remember the 2010’s when life was normal?? No, me neither. Feel free to comment on what made life during 2020 weird for you! 🥸
Keep living life random,
Amelia
