Inspiring Feminist Poem By A Girl In My Class ‘Tea Bag’

Hi everyone, I’ve already told you about the feminist movement at my school. If you haven’t read it yet, click on this link to read it. I published it yesterday.  A girl in my class wrote this short poem, ‘Tea Bag’. Here it is: Inspiration quote: “ A woman is like a tea bag; you never know how strong it is until it’s in hot water. “ -Eleanor Roosevelt I may not be too strong if I’m in cold water You put me in a boiling cup of hatred That’s when I am most formidable  I will not stop Till my cup is cool Thanks for reading, Amelia

Still I Rise By Maya Angelou

Hi everyone! Lately the girls in my class have been organizing a movement to push back against the sexism in our school. We have a document where we can share poems, quotes, and other inspirational things. On the last day of school, we are all going to wear tank tops (break the dress code) and write inspiring quotes on our hands. I just thought I’d share this spectacular poem by Maya Angelou, ‘Still I Rise’. They shared this excerpt from the poem: You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? ’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise. Here is the entire poem: You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. Does my sas...

The past few days have been part of this series so please go back and read them if you want to. ‘Standards’  Shut up  Speak up Slim waist Pretty face Big butt Hourglass  Try to be perfect But still were not worth it Doing the most Just to survive Trying our best  Just to stay alive Boys will be boys They can do whatever But the minute we speak up They’ll blame us forever Why can’t girls just be girls Thanks for reading, Amelia

2020 - Weirdest Year Ever?

Image
Hi everyone! I did a post like this back towards the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, but I figured I do another, because 2020 was a weird year. So I gathered up some of the craziest things that have happened in 2020 (not including the many pandemic-related things), and share them with you! These are only a few of the many, many things that have happened, but they are still a lengthy list. So let’s get started! (Reddit) Weird dates: First off, March 19th was the first day of spring everywhere in the USA (despite time zones). As a child, some of you learned that the spring equinox happens on either March 20 or March 21. This is the first time in 124 years the first day of spring has occurred on March 19 nationwide! Leap year: 2020 was a leap year, an extra day in February Impeachment in USA: Donald Trump was officially impeached on February 5, 2020. Part of the impeachment took place in 2019, but also in 2020. Then, he made history in December 2020-February 2021 by being impeached tw...

Books About Racism

Hi all, Amelia here! With what has been going on in the world right now, I decided I would post some books that I have read and liked about anti racism. Right now, I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This book takes place in the past (1933-35), in a fictional town. The story is told by a young girl whose father is Atticus Finch, a lawyer defending a black man. This story is amazing, but for teens and adults only. It has some bad words and not completely appropriate content. (Realistic/Historical Fiction) I read The Hate U Give  by Angie Thomas. It is told by a black girl who has trouble with racism, police brutality, and activism after watching her black friend get shot by a police. This book has a lot of bad words and inappropriate content. (Realistic/Historical Fiction) I also read The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton. Anthony Ray Hinton is a black man who spent thirty years on death row for a crime he didn’t commit. I this book was amazing, told with hu...

Protect Our Pitbulls

Did you know that the biggest pitbull in the world weighs 174 pounds and is called Hulk? It was raised to be a protection dog, but it very quickly became a gentle playmate to the family’s young child. He is the loving, caring father to eight tiny puppies (boredpanda). The world is stuck in a constant struggle arguing over these loving dogs, over whether or not they should be allowed to live. Pit bulls should be allowed to live everywhere any other dogs can live. Many people believe these gentle giants that go by the name of a pitbull are violent and dangerous creatures and should be banned, but this essay is going to tell you why that is wrong.     The sweet breed of the pit bull has been subject to many bans in the U.S. alone. Multiple cities and counties declare pit bulls vicious and dangerous. Alabama; Center Point, Fayette, Gardendale, Irondale, Lanett, Midfield, and many other areas banned pit bulls. In Arkansas, an estimated twenty-three places banned pit bulls. In Cali...

Confession Time: You Actually Like Quarantine

In March, the entire world shut down. It seemed to happen overnight. At first the coronavirus was just a far away thing and we didn’t think it would actually affect our lives. Now we are months into quarantine. Many of us haven’t seen our friends or family for two or three months. Everyone is constantly complaining about being stuck at home and unable to see other people. But what if you’re not one of those people? ... Hi everyone! Amelia here.  It’s confession time: What if you don’t mind quarantine? Deep down inside, some of us know that we aren’t really the social butterflies that we try to be. I mean sure, we love hanging out with our friends, and we love to get stuff done. But no matter how much we enjoy hanging out with friends, socializing zaps energy and we need to retreat and spend some time alone.  It’s sort of nice to be able to sit at home or bike around town without having a tight schedule to worry about. It’s nice to be able to slouch in sweats without worrying a...

Hamilton Play/Movie Review

Image
Hi, Amelia here! **spoiler alert** Hamilton is an amazing American Musical. It follows the life of Alexander Hamilton, a politician, statesman, and founding father. (Entertainment Tonight) I recently watched the Hamilton filmed production on Disney+, where it made its debut on July 3rd. I’m not exaggerating when I say that a laughed out loud, cried, and got nervous during this amazing production. (New York Times) Alexander Hamilton is played (on the screen) by Lin-Manuel Miranda. I’ve got to say, the actors are SO amazing. They made a point to make the cast diverse in the play, and it really added to the effect. (ABC News) My favorite character:  That’s really hard to choose! I loved the star, Alexander Hamilton, and I liked Aaron Burr, too. Alexander’s three friends, who he meets at the beginning of the play, at a bar, were amazing as well! The were one of the most funny parts of the show. But I loved the King as well; he was spectacular. So were the...

Hamilton Is Coming To Disney+

Hi! If you’re anything like us here at LLR, you love the Hamilton soundtrack, but have no hope of going to see it anytime in the foreseeable future. But now, it’s coming to Disney+! Granted, it’s not going to be there until July 3rd, but it’s still something to look forward to! Here are some links to information about this ~exciting~ news: Wall Street Journal CNN Article Buzzfeed This is a fairly big deal for a few reasons: 1. Tickets to Hamilton are rare and expensive 2. Everyone has been wanting this to happen and 3. HAMILTON! I MEAN, COME ON! But of course there is a problem: not everyone has Disney+, and you can’t exactly get together with a friend. So here are some easy ideas: 1. If you or a friend has Disney+, you can do a video meeting (zoom, google meet, etc. Google Meet works the best depending on your browser), and screen cast the movie. 2. A lot can change in a month! Maybe you will be able to go to a friend’s house! 3. Bring your TV outside, and sit 6 ...

Facts About The Coronavirus

Hey all, Amelia here. So far, we haven't written anything on the coronavirus. We obviously don't know all the facts and if we did, those facts would undoubtedly change within the week. So I'm going to give you the base facts. If you want more facts, the reliable websites we use  https://morgridge.org ,  cdc.gov , and  coronavirus.jhu.edu . The coronavirus receives its name from the crown-shaped cell that is seen when the virus is viewed by a very strong microscope. As for  COVID-19; ‘CO’ stands for ‘corona' (not Colorado); ‘VI’ for ‘virus'; ‘D’ stands for disease; and lastly, '19' refers to the year 2019 when the virus was identified. COVID-19 is also referred to as 'a novel coronavirus'. This simply means that this strand virus is new, or previously unidentified. There are many different strands of the coronavirus, so this one that is causing our pandemic is just one. The coronavirus was first detected in Wuhan, China. The first infectio...

Reflecting On 2020 So Far

Hi all! Amelia here. So far, 2020 has been a very weird year. You probably all know this, as you are probably all on quarantine right about now, but we will still list the facts. We obviously won’t put the coronavirus pandemic, but we’ll list some other things. Weird dates: First off, March 19th was the first day of spring everywhere in the USA (despite time zones). As a child, some of you learned that the spring equinox happens on either March 20 or March 21. This is the first time in 124 years the first day of spring has occurred on March 19 nationwide! Lots of wildfires, in the USA, ...

Trends of Today -- Using google to write my blog posts

Image
Hello! We are so glad to have you at LLR. Whether you have visited before or if this is your first time here, we hope to see you again. Comment down below on what brought you to this blog and what you hope to see in the future. But back to the point. Let's use Google to figure out what's trending in 2020: 1. There's a pandemic going around. Let's see just how popular this virus is: after typing in the first 2 letters of the word 'coronavirus', I can see it at the very bottom of the suggestions list. I tested it and added another letter and then all of the suggestions were coronavirus related. 2. Here at LLR, we appreciate Taylor Swift. What can I say? I don't think she is extremely popular anymore, though. Let's see how many letters it takes for google to guess my word: as you can see, three letters, although she is at the top of the list. Maybe she has more fans than I realized!! 3. I - Naomi - do ballet. I wonder how p...
